When we officially registered our studio back in 2012, it was to be a legit enterprise for the purpose of selling our first game, Home, on Steam. We had released the game on our own website a couple of months earlier, and were encouraged by the response. (We sold just over 3,000 copies through our own service.)
Then, on August 1, we launched the game on Steam — which was a whole different ballgame back then. Instead of the ~19,000 games released on the storefront per year that we see today, there were fewer than 900 back in 2012. And, we were featured by Valve!
We were in the right place at the right time, and, thankfully, Home became an instant hit, helping to kick off the then-bubbling indie horror scene.
After this surprise success, it looked like we could actually do this for real. Make video games full-time? Like our heroes and inspirations? It was a dream come true. So we made a little bet to give it our best effort, and we've been at it ever since.
Today, this industry is in an incredibly rocky and scary state. Who knows what the art form or the business models will look like even two years from now? And who can say how many of our colleagues and friends will still be here?
All we know is: we're not going anywhere. We can't. Developing and publishing video games; creating stories no one else has told yet; trying to master art and design and programming and whatever else is necessary to do all this... It's just what we do now. It's who we are.
We've got some new releases coming up, some surprising plans scheduled, and a new project that takes us back to the spirit of our first days in the works. Thanks for supporting us and playing our games all these years.
